10 New Uses for Baking Soda

Are you like most families who stick a box of baking soda in the back of the fridge and use it to bake cakes? There are literally hundreds of uses for baking soda. Below are the 10 uses for baking soda I selected as personal favorites, unusual, health conscious, or particularly thrifty. 

10 Uses for Baking Soda

1) Tomato Sweetener: Sprinkle around plants once a week to lower the soil pH.

2) Antacid alternative: Mix 1 teaspoon into a glass of water to help indigestion.

3) Flower freshener: Mix 1 teaspoon into water as plant food.

4) Shampoo alternative: Use with vinegar for a cheap and natural hair regiment.

5) Cleaning Scrub: mix with water to make a paste.

6) Dry Laundry Detergent: 16 cups baking soda + 12 cups washing soda + 8 cups grated soap + essential oils= a years worth of detergent

7) Deodorant: equal parts baking soda, cornstarch, and coconut oil

8) Dishwasher Detergent: 2 cups washing soda + 2 cups baking soda

9) Pre-wash stain spray: ¼ cup baking soda + ½ cup vinegar + 3 cups water

10) Toothpaste: Water + Baking soda + spearmint

  1. I use the baking soda "shampoo", it's the only thing that will work on my hair long term! And, baking soda makes a good diaper rash reliever for toddlers, throw a half a cup in some warm water, and let 'em play (for at least ten minutes)! Haha, had to add that ;).
    The tomato sweetener is very interesting, I didn't know that! (My Dad probably did, though, he has read so many gardening books, haha!). We make our own scouring powered for the tubs/grout with equal parts baking soda, washing soda, and borax :).
